The Computer Science Department at Bucknell University invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position to start in August 2024. Bucknell is a highly selective, primarily undergraduate university with a strong commitment to the intellectual freedom and broad experience of a residential liberal arts education. We actively seek candidates from diverse backgrounds who have an active intellectual life that they wish to share with our community, and we strongly encourage candidates from groups underrepresented in higher education to apply. We seek candidates with the potential to effectively teach computer science courses throughout the curriculum and to contribute one or more electives in their area(s) of interest. Candidates whose scholarship is in any area of computer science or a closely related field should apply. We are equally interested in candidates whose scholarship aligns with others in the department and those who broaden our departmental expertise in new directions, such as artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, security, data science, or databases. The department also values interdisciplinary collaborations with the arts, humanities, mathematics, natural & social sciences, management, and engineering.

We welcome all candidates who demonstrate excellence in reflective multicultural and inclusive teaching practices and who display strong commitments to collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and building community based on equity and access. We invite you to learn about Bucknell’s centers and institutions such as the Griot Center for the Study of Black Lives and Cultures, and The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender, to name a few, that center the experiences of underrepresented groups and provide vital intellectual spaces on campus as well as opportunities for faculty to collaborate across disciplines.

We emphasize student-centered education and our faculty have a passion for teaching, striving for continuous improvement and excellence. Bucknell supports faculty in developing and maintaining active research programs and engaging undergraduate students in those programs. Collaboration within and across departments and colleges is supported and encouraged. Our department is very collegial and collaborative, and we look forward to welcoming, supporting, and mentoring new colleagues in all aspects of their responsibilities. In addition, University-wide resources such as the Teaching and Learning Center, The Office of Civic Engagement, and the Bucknell Center for Sustainability and the Environment are available to help faculty in both their teaching and scholarly endeavors.

Candidates must hold a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field by the start of employment. Candidates with commensurate experience may apply for an accelerated tenure process after one or more years at Bucknell.

Application requires a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy (3 page maximum), statement of scholarly work, and contact information for three confidential references. These statements should clearly establish your interest in working at a primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution, how you may include undergraduate students in your work, and how your experiences, knowledge, skills, or past accomplishments will contribute to the Department’s and University’s goals of equity and inclusive excellence. We will begin reviewing applications on October 2, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.
